Brandi Chastain Biography
Brandi Chastain is a retired soccer player known for her time with the United States national team from 1988 to 2004. Her memorable career includes two FIFA Women's World Cup championships and two Olympic gold medals. One of her most iconic moments came in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup final, where she scored a penalty shootout goal against China, securing the World Cup for her team. Her professional career spanned several teams, including Shiroki FC, San Jose CyberRays, FC Gold Pride, and California Storm.
In 2013, Chastain was named to the USWNT All-Time Best XI, and she was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in March 2017, followed by the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. She also played a part in shaping the future of women's soccer as a founding player in the Women's United Soccer Association. In 2014, Chastain transitioned into coaching, leading Bellarmine College Preparatory to their first CCS open division championship title in 2018.
Chastain is the co-founder of the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI), which she created alongside Julie Foudy and Marlene Bjornsrud in 2005 to provide opportunities for young girls who weren't exposed to organized sports or physical education classes and to reach girls in communities where obesity and diabetes were prevalent.
Her influence extends into mass media, with numerous television appearances on shows such as "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Show with David Letterman," and "Good Morning America." Chastain also ventured into authorship, penning "It's Not About the Bra: Play Hard, Play Fair, and Put the Fun Back Into Competitive Sports" in 2005. She has been featured in magazines like Sports Illustrated, Time, and Newsweek and has had endorsement deals with notable companies like Nike and Gatorade.
