Detroit also experiences a huge socioeconomic gap, debt and racial/ cultural oppression among other obstacles toward its success. Bringing awareness of how certain privileges and discrimination can intersect and coincide is integral in tackling the issues of marginalization on the grander scale.
As a Transportation & Automotive Design major at the College for Creative Studies, I am an everyday advocate for encouraging young women and girls to pursue their passion in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is only when our young women of today can flourish in these areas that we can start to tackle equality in male dominated fields in the future.
Alternative fuel sources, sustainable materials, evolving user interaction and technology are issues automotive designers are constantly researching and improving upon. All of that begins with advancing STEM programs for young girls.
1 in 5 Americans experience mental illness every year. However, for minorities, this number is exacerbated by the obstacles of cultural stigma and less access to care.
Maintaining my personal mental health has been a private journey for the majority of my life as is for millions of other Americans struggling with mental illness diagnosed and undiagnosed. However, the time is now to begin bringing this subject into forefront and demystify what can often times be seen as an intimidating and uncomfortable discussion.
Mental illness does not discriminate, thus we do not have the luxury to do so either.
As a Korean immigrant from Beijing, China and naturalized citizen at the age of 14, advocating for first generation Americans has been a personal struggle as well as a passion project. In both encouraging the exchange of education between foreign and U.S born citizens, hopefully a new atmosphere for healthy discourse can emerge in our future generations.
