Carlotta Berry Biography
Carlotta A. Berry is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and the Dr. Lawrence J. Giacoletto Endowed Chair for Electrical and Computer Engineering. She is the first Black woman to earn tenure, full professor and endowed chairship at Rose-Hulman. Renowned for her expertise in educational mobile robotics and human-robot interaction, she is a passionate advocate for increasing diversity in STEM fields, focusing on the recruitment and retention of underrepresented populations in engineering.
Dr. Berry earned dual bachelor's degrees in mathematics from Spelman College and electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. She furthered her education with a master's degree in control systems from Wayne State University and a PhD in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University, where her research centered on enhancing human-robot interfaces.
At Rose-Hulman, Dr. Berry co-founded the Rose Building Undergraduate Diversity (ROSE-BUD) program, which provides scholarships and support to talented female and underrepresented minority students in computer science and engineering disciplines. She also co-directs the multidisciplinary robotics program.
Beyond her academic roles, Dr. Berry co-founded Black In Engineering and Black In Robotics, organizations dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion within the engineering and robotics communities. She also founded NoireSTEMinist educational consulting.
Dr. Berry is an accomplished author, with publications including "Mobile Robotics for Multidisciplinary Study" and "Mitigating Bias in Machine Learning," co-written with Brandeis Marshall. Additionally, she has written the "There's A Robot!" series of children's books, aimed at introducing young minds to robotics.
Dr. Berry has received numerous prestigious honors, including the 2024 Forbes 50 Over 50 in Innovation, ASEE Fellow, IEEE Senior Member, 2023 IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award, 2023 Hopper Celebration Abie Award for Educational Innovation, 2022 SWE Distinguished Engineering Educator Award, and the 2021 TechPoint Foundation for Youth Bridge Builder Award.
