Daryl Johnston Biography
Former 3x Super Bowl Champion fullback for the Dallas Cowboys, Daryl Johnston is a current NFL analyst on Fox Sports and General Manager of the AAF San Antonio Commanders.
Johnston attended Syracuse University, where he rushed for 1,830 yards and caught 46 passes. He graduated with a B.A. in Economics and was named All-Big East (‘87) and All-American (’88). Johnston was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round (39th overall) of the 1989 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he received his nickname "Moose" from backup quarterback Babe Laufenberg because of his large stature compared to the rest of the running backs. The name caught on among Dallas fans who would chant "Moooooose" whenever he made a play.
As a Cowboy, Johnston played in 149 consecutive games from 1989-1997. He was a key member of the Cowboys’ 3x winning Super Bowl teams (’93, ’94 & ’96) and a 2x Pro Bowl selection (’93 & ’94), including being the first fullback selected to the NFC Pro Bowl team in 1993. He received All-Pro honors from Sports Illustrated and the 1992 Ed Block Courage Award for demonstrating courage in dealing with injuries. Johnston retired at the end of the 1999 season, after suffering a neck injury.
After retirement, Johnston served one year as a game analyst for NFL on CBS before joining the FOX NFL booth in 2001, where he can still be seen every Sunday during the season. In addition to Johnston’s prominent post in the booth, he’s been a part or contributed to other various football programming including KDFW’s The Tickets, NFL Network's Total Access, the collegiate Cotton Bowl Classic game, and PBS’s Wishbone episode of "Moonbone". He now resides in Dallas, Texas with his wife Diane, son Aidan, and daughter Evan.
