ROSELAND — Kids off the Block founder Diane Latiker has been named a 2016 L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Honoree. “When I found out, I got really excited,” she said. “I’m very honored and very proud to be included with some remarkable women who give me hope. This let’s me know I’m not alone out here in making this world a better place, especially for our young people.”
"Lord knows we have too many guns here. ... We're coming to the point when we accept that this is normal, when you have grandmothers, babies shot in the daytime," said Diane Latiker, founder of Kids Off The Block, who, like Hargove, lives in Chicago's Rosedale neighborhood.
In a run-down stretch of Chicago's South Michigan Avenue, miles from the museums and skyscrapers, an army of foot-high paving stones stand on shelves along the street. It's a handmade memorial to honor the young people who have died at the hands of the city's street violence. A name is written on each of the 574 stones. But they are not just names to Diane Latiker.
Gun violence plagues Chicago. There were more than 2,000 shootings in the city last year alone. The shootings increase in the summer months: over the holiday weekend, dozens of people were shot and nine died in the gunfire. Beneath the sobering figures are personal stories, both of fear and resilience. NBC News' Tracy Jarrett spent time in Chicago to hear them.
Following President Obama’s speech in Chicago today, addressing gun violence, CNN Anchor Chris Cuomo asks Diane Latiker how she helps fight the epidemic. Latiker, who started nonprofit organization Kids Off the Block, helps thousands of young people to stay off the streets.
