Ed Rendell Biography
With over 30 years of public service, including 24 years as an elected official, Ed Rendell continues to pursue many of the same issues he was passionate about while serving as two term Governor of Pennsylvania (2003-2011) and Mayor of Philadelphia (1992-2000).
During his time as Governor, he committed to making America a cleaner, more efficient place and fostered investment in our nation’s infrastructure while overseeing a budget of $28.3 billion. He demanded more responsibility of the government and encouraged them to be more responsive to the public’s needs, all while successfully cutting wasteful spending and improving efficiency leading to savings of over $1 billion. His legislative agenda focused on commonsense political reform and putting progress ahead of partisanship in an effort to revitalize communities, improve education, protect the environment, expand access to health care to all children and much more.
During his two terms as Mayor of Philadelphia, Rendell eliminated a crippling deficit, balanced the City’s budget, and generated five consecutive budget surpluses.
In 2012, Rendell published his first book "A Nation of Wusses: How America's Leaders Lost the Guts to Make Us Great."
He has continued to advocate for a better America as a political analyst on NBC and MSNBC where he provides his trademark straightforwardness and colorful analysis of everyday issues.
Prior to serving as Mayor, Rendell was elected District Attorney of Philadelphia for two terms from 1978 through 1985, and served as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee during the 2000 Presidential election.
