Erin Lee Carr is a documentary filmmaker known for her focus on criminal justice, femininity, and virality. She has gained recognition through several impactful works, such as "Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop," "Mommy Dead and Dearest," and the HBO documentaries "I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter" and "At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal." Carr is the daughter of the late David Carr, a media columnist for The New York Times. She has also authored a memoir titled "All That You Leave Behind: A Memoir," which explores themes of love, addiction, and the complex relationship between father and daughter.
Carr's early career included internships and assistant roles that broadened her experience in media and documentary production. In the summer of 2009, she interned at Fox Searchlight Pictures in the public relations department. Later that year, she served as a Media Assistant at the Instructional Media Center in the Communication Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. By November 2010, Carr was working as an office production assistant on Lena Dunham's TV show, "Girls." After graduating in 2010, she joined VICE, progressing to an Associate Producer for VICE Media's Motherboard. During her time at VICE, she created content like "Spaced Out" and "My Life Online," and produced a documentary titled "Click. Print. Gun.," focusing on Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed. Carr left VICE in June 2013 for a position at Vox Media's The Verge, where she curated various stories.
Carr's documentaries have consistently received acclaim and recognition within the film industry. Her debut HBO documentary, "Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop," premiered at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. "Mommy Dead and Dearest" was released in May 2017 by HBO, becoming one of the most-watched documentaries of the year and was featured at festivals such as SXSW, HotDocs, and DocAviv. In 2019, she released "At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal," which also premiered at Tribeca and was subsequently aired on HBO. Carr directed the limited series "How to Fix a Drug Scandal," which was released on Netflix in April 2020. Additionally, in February 2021, Bloomberg reported that Carr was developing a documentary for Netflix about Britney Spears, focusing on her father's and former business manager Lou M Taylor's control under a 13-year conservatorship. This documentary aims to shed light on significant issues surrounding celebrity culture and legal oversight.
