George Lopez Biography

George Lopez’s illustrious and multi-faceted career encompasses television, film, stand-up comedy, and late-night television. Lopez is widely recognized as a trailblazer for Latino comics, celebrating his heritage, challenging racial stereotypes, and advocating for his community both on and off the stage.

Lopez has four HBO specials, including "The Wall" and "Tall, Dark and Chicano," the latter of which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. His 2004 Showtime special "Why You Crying?" was highly praised, and he received two other Grammy nominations, for America's Mexican and Team Leader

Lopez produced and starred in the semi-autobiographical sitcom "Lopez" on TV Land for two seasons, exploring his personal struggles. In 2014, he co-created and starred in "Saint George" for FX. He also hosted the late-night show "Lopez Tonight" on TBS for two seasons, following his success with the hit sitcom "George Lopez," which ran for six seasons on ABC. Lately, he stars alongside his daughter Mayan in the NBC comedy "Lopez vs Lopez," a family sitcom based on their real-life relationship.

Lopez’s film credits include "Walking with Herb," "No Man’s Land," "The Tax Collector," "El Chicano," "Valentine's Day," "The Spy Next Door," and "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl." He starred in and produced "Spare Parts," an inspiring true story about Mexican American teens building a robot for a national competition. Lopez was also featured in the documentary "Brown is the New Green," highlighting his advocacy for Latino representation. Most recently, he joined the DC Extended Universe in "Blue Beetle." Featuring a predominantly Latino cast, the film follows its first ever Mexican- American teenager-turned-superhero.

Additionally, Lopez has lent his voice to a string of animated blockbuster films including "Gnome Alone" and "Escape from Planet Earth" as well as "Rio," "Smurfs," "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" and "Cats & Dogs" franchises.

Lopez is also an author. His autobiography, "Why You Crying?," co-written with Armen Keteyian, was a New York Times bestseller. "I’m Not Gonna Lie And Other Lies You Tell When You Turn 50," a memoir, was published in 2007. He has also ventured into children's literature with Ryan Calejo, co-authoring the middle grade "Chupacarter" series, which explores themes of friendship, belonging, and embracing one's heritage.

As co-founder and director of The George Lopez Foundation, Lopez has channeled his charitable energy in the nonprofit world to improve and save the lives of people confronting the challenges of chronic kidney conditions. Lopez himself is the recipient of a kidney transplant.

In 2005, TIME recognized Lopez as one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America, and nearly two decades later, he was honored again on TIME’s Latin Leaders 2024 list. In 2016, he cemented his legacy with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The tireless Lopez can be found still performing stand-up in arenas across the country on his ALLLRIIIIGHHTTT! Comedy Tour.
