Giles Duley Biography
Giles Duley is a CEO, photographer, writer, storyteller, and presenter from London. His work focuses on the long-term humanitarian impact of conflict and he partners with international charities like Medecins Sans Frontiers, IOM, and UNHCR, in addition to previously noted organizations such as HI (Humanity and Inclusion), EMERGENCY, Save the Children, and UNHCR to bring attention to lesser-known stories that merit public awareness and action.
Starting his career as a music photographer, Duley worked with notable musicians including Mariah Carey, Oasis, and Lenny Kravitz for prestigious publications such as Q, Vogue, Sunday Times, and Elle. His image of Marilyn Manson was once voted amongst the 100 greatest rock photographs of all time. Transitioning to documentary work in 2004, he has captured the resilience of individuals in adverse situations across various countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan, DR Congo, and more. His compelling photography has been featured in respected outlets like "Vogue," "GQ," "Esquire," "Rolling Stone," "Sunday Times," "The Observer," and "New Statesman."
In 2011, while on assignment in Afghanistan, Duley was severely injured by an IED, resulting in him becoming a triple-amputee. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he returned to Afghanistan in 2012 to continue his photography. He was awarded the Prix de Paris in 2010 and 2012 and was a nominee for an Amnesty International Media Award in 2010, winning the award in 2019 for Photojournalism. His self-portrait was selected for the 2012 Taylor Wessing Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.
Duley is the founder and CEO of the Legacy of War Foundation, an international charity that supports communities and individuals as they rebuild their lives post-conflict. He is also an active campaigner for the rights of refugees and those living with disabilities. As a presenter, he has produced content for channels like C4 and VICE, including the six-part series "The One-Armed Chef" in 2022.
