Joe Buck Biography
Joe Buck is a prominent sportscaster and the lead play-by-play broadcaster for ESPN's Monday Night Football beginning with the 2022 NFL season. He formerly worked for Fox Sports from its inception in 1994, including roles as lead play-by-play announcer for the network's National Football League and Major League Baseball coverage. Over his career, Buck has been honored with seven Sports Emmy awards and three National Sportscaster of the Year awards, highlighting his significant impact in the field.
Buck began his network play-by-play career in the NFL on FOX broadcast booth, where he worked from 1994-1997 alongside NFL on FOX analyst Tim Green. They formed one of the network's original six NFL broadcast teams in 1994 when, at the age of 25, Buck became the youngest announcer to call a regular slate of NFL games on television. He made broadcasting history by being the first play-by-play announcer to handle lead MLB and NFL coverage in the same year, a feat previously accomplished only by renowned predecessors like Curt Gowdy and Al Michaels.
Currently, Buck also serves as the lead announcer for FOX Sports’ United States Golf Association (USGA) coverage, including the prestigious U.S. Open Championship. He has been a radio and television announcer for the St. Louis Cardinals since 1991 and remains active in the St. Louis community. His broadcasting career began in 1989, while still an undergraduate at Indiana University, doing baseball play-by-play for the Louisville Redbirds, a minor league affiliate of the Cardinals. Buck's extensive experience also includes calling multiple World Series and All-Star Games for MLB on FOX and working with notable analysts such as Troy Aikman, Cris Collinsworth, and Tim McCarver.
Apart from his sports broadcasting career, Buck is actively involved in various national and local charities. He hosts The Joe Buck Classic golf tournament, benefiting St. Louis Children’s Hospital and funding its imaging center. Since its inception in 2000, the annual event has raised more than $5 million. Buck also collaborates closely with the Parkinson’s Foundation, Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club, and City of Hope. In 2016, he published an autobiography, "Lucky Bastard," detailing his experiences and career. Buck currently resides in St. Louis, maintaining strong ties to his community and family legacy as the son of broadcasting legend Jack Buck.
