Lee Corso Biography
Lee Corso, a seasoned college football analyst, is a cornerstone of ESPN's college football production team. He joined the network in 1987, bringing with him a wealth of coaching experience from both college football and professional levels, totaling 28 years with 17 seasons as a head coach. Corso provides analysis for ESPN's "College GameDay," engaging viewers with his insightful commentary during their pre-game, halftime, and scoreboard shows.
Corso's coaching career saw significant milestones including his tenure at Louisville from 1969-72, where he amassed a 28-11-3 record and led the Cardinals to their first bowl game, the Pasadena Bowl. He then moved to Indiana in 1973, where over 10 seasons the Hoosiers secured a 41-68-2 record. His highlight at Indiana was achieving the school's first bowl victory in 75 years with a 38-37 win against previously unbeaten Brigham Young at the 1979 Holiday Bowl. He briefly coached at Northern Illinois in 1984, followed by a season with the Orlando Renegades of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1985. His early coaching career included assistant roles at Florida State, Maryland, and Navy from 1958 to 1968. Additionally, he served as the General Manager of the World League's Orlando Thunder from January to July 1991. His broadcasting career started with his role as an analyst for Mizlou's bowl games from 1979-82 and USFL games for ABC in 1983.
Since joining ESPN, Corso has also called one season of Arena Football analysis and initially covered college football games for two years before moving to the studio. His dynamic presence on "College GameDay" since 1989 has significantly contributed to the show's reputation as the definitive college football pre-game show, which has even garnered three Sports Emmy Awards. Known for his daring predictions and iconic moments donning team mascot headpieces, Corso has cultivated a notable following, especially among college students. His catchphrase, "Not so fast, my friend," often sparks lively debates with his colleagues on air.
Corso, who was college roommates with actor Burt Reynolds, earned four varsity letters in both football and baseball at Florida State University, where he is honored in the FSU Hall of Fame. He completed his bachelor of arts degree in physical education in 1957 and his master's degree in administration and supervision in 1958.
Beyond broadcasting, Corso advances his career as the Director of Business Development for Dixon Ticonderoga in Maitland, Fla., a global leader in the manufacturing and marketing of writing and arts products.
