A really powerful and emotional speech. Getting to know a family's history is very important for everyone to understand a certain culture. Mr. Hawkins's advice on how to get people to talk about bad experiences is extremely useful in everyday reporting.

This was one of the most engaging sessions we've had. It was very personal and raw. I thought the author shared a very brave story and Ms. McDaniels was thoughtful and considerate in her questions. I liked that Mr. Hawkins went deep into the slave owner history in his family tree and talked about the historical trauma this brings on Black people in America.

Lee Hawkins' presentation was powerful and touching. He encouraged me to think more compassionately and analytically about my own family's history of trauma and how that may have lasting impacts today. We hear about cycles of violence and poverty, but less so about cycles of trauma. He made me think about how that cycle can self perpetuate without systems of support, critical self reflection and outside intervention. Andrea McDaniel's questions were excellent and thought-provoking.

Both Lee Hawkins and Andrea K. McDaniels were excellent. I felt very grateful to be able to hear Mr. Hawkins read part of his book. The passage was incredibly personal and deep, it connected the deeply personal with the bigger historial picture. It painted such clear picture of the meaning of generational trauma. I thought Mrs. McDaniels was great at doing the interviews and I could feel her energy through the screen. All in all, I felt how deeply moved all of us were by listening and the questions asked by other colleagues were meaningful too. Thank you very much for organizing this panel. I can't wait to read the book and share with others.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your to give such a powerful session to our 2020 National Fellows. We have been putting on these Fellowships for 16 years, and I can’t remember another session that left such a lasting impression and had me thinking about it over so many days. You have such an amazing story to tell, and yet one that is as American as they come. I feel really privileged that we were able to give our Fellows a sneak preview of what I know will be a must-read book.
