Marc Agronin, MD Biography
Marc E. Agronin, MD is a board-certified adult and geriatric psychiatrist and the author of several acclaimed books, including "The End of Old Age: Living a Longer, More Purposeful Life" (2018), "How We Age: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Growing Old" (2011), and more recently, "Therapy with Older Clients: Key Strategies for Success" (2010), "Principles and Practice of Geriatric Psychiatry, 2nd Edition" (2011; co-editor), "Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias: A Practical Guide, 3rd Edition" (2014), and "The Dementia Caregiver: A Guide to Caring for Someone with Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Neurocognitive Disorders" (2015). He joined the staff of Miami Jewish Health (MJH), one of Florida’s largest not-for-profit long-term care providers, in 1999, serving as the director of mental health services and the founding director of the memory center and Alzheimer’s clinical research program. In 2015, Dr. Agronin was promoted to Vice President for Behavioral Health and Clinical Research at MJH. He is also an Affiliate Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. A graduate of Harvard University, summa cum laude, and the Yale School of Medicine, he completed his residency training in adult psychiatry at Harvard University’s McLean Hospital and a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.
Dr. Agronin is the 2008 recipient of the "Clinician of the Year" award from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is a two-time finalist for the Health Care Heroes Award by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Agronin is a national expert in Alzheimer’s disease and other geriatric mental health issues, and leads both a memory center and one of Florida’s largest Alzheimer’s clinical research programs. His publications include articles in the New York Times and Scientific American Mind, and he writes regular blogs and articles on aging, health, and retirement issues for the Wall Street Journal as part of the Experts panel. Dr. Agronin is currently spearheading the creation of a new empathy-based care model called EmpathiCare, along with the first EmpathiCare-based village for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, on the campus of Miami Jewish Health. This innovative initiative aims to enhance care for dementia patients through a focused approach on empathy and understanding.
