Morgan Neville Biography
Morgan Neville is an Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker and a University of Pennsylvania alumnus based in Los Angeles, California. With over two decades of experience, he has crafted films about music and cultural subjects including Troubadours, Search and Destroy, and three Grammy-nominated films: "Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story", "Muddy Waters Can’t Be Satisfied", and "Johnny Cash’s America". His non-music films include "The Cool School", "Steinbeck" and "Shotgun Freeway: Drives Thru Lost L.A.". Beyond this, he has produced numerous documentaries, such as "Pearl Jam Twenty", "Crossfire Hurricane" and "Beauty is Embarrassing". In 1999, Neville founded Tremolo Productions, a company he continues to manage today.
In 2014, his film "20 Feet From Stardom" won numerous awards, including the Academy Award and a Grammy Award for Best Music Film. Neville's other notable projects include "Best of Enemies", which won an Emmy Award for Best Historical Documentary at the 2017 News and Documentary Emmy Awards, and was also shortlisted for the 2016 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. He has directed and executive produced television series like "Ugly Delicious", "Abstract: The Art of Design", "Chelsea Does", "Shangri-La", and "Song Exploder".
His 2018 film, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?", a documentary about Fred Rogers, received critical acclaim and became the highest-grossing biographical documentary of all time. Apart from these, he has directed award-nominated films like "Steve! (Martin) A Documentary In 2 Pieces" and led innovative projects such as "Piece By Piece", an Oscar-contending documentary about Pharrell Williams that uses LEGOs as a storytelling medium. Additionally, Neville is currently working on a documentary titled "Man on the Run", focusing on Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles creative surge, and the two-part documentary "Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces" for Apple TV+.
Other significant works include the film "Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain", "The Saint of Second Chances", a Netflix documentary, and "They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead", a documentary on the making of Orson Welles' final film. He also recently produced a Netflix series featuring Bill Gates exploring AI, social media, and other issues. With a focus on the future of filmmaking, Neville has been involved in discussions about the importance of 'gatekeepers' in reaching diverse audiences.
