Over a 25 month period between August 2018 and September 2020, Philip J. Carcia set the Fastest Known Times for the two biggest, most iconic, list-based projects in the White Mountains of New Hampshire - the Grid, and the Redline.
"Giving Fully" breaks down both of these history-making projects from conception to execution and beyond. Be prepared to walk away from this presentation with a deeper understanding of both the White Mountain National Forest, and what we're capable of when we're prepared to give our whole selves in the pursuit of a dream.
Between June 21st 2020 and September 28th 2020, Philip J. Carcia hiked all 652 primary trails listed in the official White Mountain Guide, a feat known as the "Redline." Of the 60 people who have completed the White Mountain Redline, Philip is only the second to have done so in under a year, and currently holds the "Fastest Known Time" for the effort in 99 days, 9 hours, 30 minutes. "In a Single Season" takes you way off the beaten path and directly beside Philip as he details what it was like to walk 20 miles per day for nearly 100 days, without a day off, in the White Mountain National Forest of New Hampshire.
Between August 23rd 2018 and July 7th 2019, Massachusetts hiker Philip J. Carcia climbed all 48 4,000 footers in the White Mountains, in every month, for 12 consecutive months, establishing the "Fastest Known Time" for one of the most grueling and obscure peak-bagging projects in the Northeast - the Single Year Grid. This unparalleled retelling of Carcia's journey navigates themes of personal loss, reclamation and "giving fully."
It was well after dark on a recent evening when Philip Carcia, a record-breaking hiker, emerged from another 28-mile day in the woods, his legs streaked with mud and crisscrossed with bloody cuts, into a desolate parking lot near New Hampshire’s border with Maine. Mr. Carcia, 36, has been living out of his red Toyota Yaris on the outer reaches of the White Mountain National Forest all summer, attempting to break the record on an obscure and extreme hiking challenge known as the Redline: a journey through all 650 trails in a guidebook of the White Mountains, for a total of 2,000 miles and half a million feet of vertical gain.
A cold, miserable rain fell across New Hampshire’s Carter-Moriah Range. Two feet of snow blanketed the ridge, and with each step, Philip Carcia felt his heart sinking lower than his boot in the unbroken trail. It was October 30, 2018, and he wasn’t prepared for this. Carcia trudged on, without snowshoes, for more than 15 hours across the 20-mile length of the Wildcat-Carter-Moriah Traverse.
For the past 11 months or so, hiking has been Philip Carcia’s full-time job. Well, hiking, driving to and from trailheads, and picking up hours at his actual job, scrubbing toilets and answering phones at a New Hampshire hiker’s hostel. Over 319 days, Carcia, 35, clocked an average of 40 to 80 miles and 20 to 30,000 feet of gain per week, plus 10 to 20 hours a week in the car, all on very little sleep. His journey culminated on July 7th, when Carcia set a new fastest known time on “the Grid” of the White Mountains.
While setting a speed record for New Hampshire hiking, Philip Carcia was sometimes struck with a sort of reverse déjà vu. Halfway through a hike, he’d question whether he had completed an earlier one on his list. “I’d get fanatical about checking that I had been to peaks,” he recalled. “I’d think, ‘I can’t really remember, was I on Cannon in February? I don’t have a vivid memory of Cannon in February.’ And I’d start to kind of panic a little bit. As soon as I’d get home, I’d look at my data and see the notes and think, ‘Phew, OK, cool, I was there. OK, we’re good.’”
