The widespread popularity of TikTok has not just created a new generation of social media stars, it has also created a social media billionaire. Zhang Yiming, the 38-year-old software engineer who founded the app's parent company, ByteDance, now has a net worth of $44.5 billion, Bloomberg estimates.
Employees at Beijing-based ByteDance were taken by surprise on Thursday when Zhang Yiming, the soft-spoken founder of the world’s largest unicorn, announced he was giving up his role as chief executive to “be more impactful on longer-term initiatives”, less than one month after the company’s IPO plans were put on hold.
Zhang Yiming built ByteDance into one of the biggest names in Chinese tech. Now he's stepping down as CEO at just 38 years old, becoming the latest young tech entrepreneur in China to quit while leading a company on the rise.
“We believe in technology,” Zhang Yiming, the C.E.O. of Bytedance, said last year. In 2012, Zhang founded Beijing Bytedance, one of China’s fastest-growing tech startups, which now has a valuation of more than twenty billion dollars and earns much of its revenue from advertising.
