Craig Mello Biography
Dr. Craig Mello, a professor of molecular medicine, is the Blais University Chair in Molecular Medicine, Co-Director of the RNA Therapeutics Institute, and a Distinguished Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He holds a joint appointment as an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2000. Dr. Mello is known for his work with Dr. Andrew Z. Fire in the discovery of RNA interference (RNAi), a study that immensely contributed to the RNAi biotechnology industry. Using double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to induce gene silencing, their research earned them the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The role of dsRNA in gene silencing is a highly conserved mechanism across species, providing significant insights into gene regulation and opening new fields in biology.
Dr. Mello's current research continues to explore the regulation and propagation of genetic information. His work investigates how proteins use short segments of genetic code (20-30 nucleotides of RNA) to recognize and regulate specific genes. This process, mediated by Argonaute (AGO) proteins, is highly conserved across plants and animals. The Mello lab uses C. elegans to investigate the role of AGO pathways in living organisms and in epigenetic inheritance. Apart from his research, Dr. Mello is also an active participant in the broader scientific community. He co-founded RXi Pharmaceuticals and currently chairs its Scientific Advisory Board. He also serves as a member of the Technology Advisory Board for Beeologics, an organization dedicated to RNAi products for honeybee health, and delivered the keynote Baccalaureate Address at Brown University's Commencement in 2007.
A graduate of Brown University and Harvard University, Dr. Mello has been distinguished with a multitude of awards, including the 2003 Wiley Prize, the 2003 National Academy of Sciences Award in Molecular Biology, the 2005 Canada Gairdner International Award, and the 2005 Massry Prize. In 2008, he received the Hope Funds Award of Excellence in Basic Research. He was also the inaugural recipient of The Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research in 2006 and was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2005. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field of molecular medicine, Mello was bestowed with honorary doctorates from Brown University in 2007 and from Simmons College in 2008. Mello's articles appear in EMBO, Cell, and Nature, among other prominent journals, including the influential paper "Potent and specific genetic interference by double-stranded RNA in Caenorhabditis elegans." In addition, he holds a US Patent 6506559 for Genetic inhibition by double-stranded RNA.
