As the former President and CEO of PayPal, Dan Schulman focused on democratizing and transforming financial services and e-commerce to improve the financial health of billions of people, families, and businesses around the world. With extensive experience in payments and mobile technology, Schulman led PayPal to reimagine how people move and manage money, and how merchants and consumers interact and transact. Under his leadership from 2015 to 2023, PayPal was named one of the top companies on JUST Capital’s and Forbes’ JUST 100 list, featuring “companies doing right by America”, and was recognized as a Fortune Change the World company for its work to tackle the biggest challenges facing society today.
Schulman is recognized for his expertise on the Future of Money and values-based leadership, frequently addressing significant topics such as the implications of Generative AI in business and the future of commerce, capitalism, and cash. Furthermore, he is known for advocating racial equity, economic empowerment, and inclusion, consistently blending profit with purpose in his business approach.
Before his tenure at PayPal, Schulman served as Group President at American Express and President of the Prepaid Group at Sprint Nextel Corporation after its acquisition of Virgin Mobile USA, Inc., which he led as the founding CEO for eight years. Earlier, he was President and CEO of Priceline Group, Inc., guiding the company through a period of significant growth and expansion. Schulman also brought his leadership to AT&T, where he spent 18 years and held multiple positions, including President of the Consumer Markets Division.
Schulman’s contributions to business and society have been widely recognized. He was named one of Fortune's "Top 20 Businesspersons of the Year" and one of Glassdoor's "Top 50 CEOs". Additionally, he has received the Frederick Douglass Award from the New York Urban League, the Ripple of Hope Award from Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, and the High-Impact Leader of the Year Award from Endeavor Global, among others. Rutgers University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, recognizing his significant contributions to promoting economic and financial literacy.
Currently, Schulman serves on the boards of Verizon Communications, Inc., and Cisco. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and actively engages with the World Economic Forum as Co-Chair of the Steering Committee to promote global financial inclusion. He also influences the financial sector through his roles with the Board of Governors and Board of Stewards for the World Economic Forum’s Future of Financial & Monetary Systems platform, in addition to his involvement with Autism Speaks and The Economic Club of New York.
