Diego Luna Biography
Diego Luna is an actor, director, and producer recognized for his significant performances in film and television. Descended from a family with artistic roots—his father, Alejandro Luna, is a set designer, and his late mother, Fiona Alexander, was a costume designer—Diego was introduced to the arts at a very young age. He initiated his acting career in telenovelas as a child, soon earning recognition for his skills and presence.
Luna gained international prominence with his role in Alfonso Cuarón's distinguished film "Y Tu Mamá También," where he shared the screen with his lifelong friend Gael García Bernal. The film received widespread praise, opening the door for Luna to Hollywood. Luna starred in an array of films, including "Frida," "The Terminal," and the biographic drama "Milk," in which he portrayed Jack Lira, a significant figure in Harvey Milk's life.
In 2016, Luna gained further international attention for his role as Cassian Andor in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." His portrayal of the determined Rebel Alliance intelligence officer was broadly acknowledged, leading to a dedicated Disney+ series, "Andor," which delves into the character's backstory and provided Luna with a platform to showcase his range as an actor. Luna also served as an executive producer for the series. In recognition of his performance, he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor - Television Series Drama.
Adding to his acting credentials, Luna has also directed three feature films: "Abel," "Cesar Chavez," and "Mr. Pig." As a producer, Luna co-founded Canana Films and later La Corriente del Golfo, through which numerous films and series have been produced. Of note, he starred as drug trafficker Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in the series "Narcos: Mexico" from 2018 to 2020. Luna has also lent his voice to children's animations, including "DC League of Super-Pets" and all installments of Guillermo del Toro's "Tales of Arcadia" franchise. In 2024, he is set to executive produce and star in "The Boys: Mexico" spinoff.
Diego Luna is also an engaged activist, using his platform to advocate for social justice and humanitarian causes. He co-founded Ambulante, a documentary film festival and organization aimed at leveraging films as tools for social transformation.
