King Peggy Bartels Biography
Peggielene Bartels, also known as King Peggy, is recognized for being the first female King of Otuam, a Ghanaian village, and transforming the town's infrastructure while holding a job at the Ghanaian embassy in the US. She divides her time between her duties in Otuam and Washington, D.C., and outside of her duties as King, she manages a travel agency that promotes Ghana and supports local improvements.
Bartels raised funds and sought donors to bring a water system to Otuam, eliminating the need for children, sometimes as young as five, to travel extensive distances to fetch fresh water. Land fees, which were either uncollected or misused for years, now go directly into an account in a rural bank opened in Otuam. Among her other goals is the establishment of a high school for students who have completed ninth grade.
As King of Otuam, Bartels aims to empower women. She believes that the future of Africa lies in the hands of its women and hopes that more women will follow in her footsteps in pursuing positions of authority. She co-authored a book about her journey titled "King Peggy: An American Secretary, Her Royal Destiny, and the Inspiring Story of How She Changed an African Village".
