Mary Ewing-Mulligan, Master of Wine, is a leading wine educator, columnist, and author. She was the first woman in North America to become a Master of Wine, a title that represents the highest level of knowledge and proficiency in the wine trade. She is currently one of only 57 Masters of Wine in the U.S., and 417 in the world.
Like everyone these days, Mary Ewing-Mulligan – America’s first female Master of Wine and president of the International Wine Center (IWC) in New York City, where she has taught since 1984 – and I are meeting on Zoom. I’m reminded of that horrible metaphor from the Vietnam War era about “seeing the light at the end of the tunnel,” but that’s where we are right now, glimpsing hope that the Covid pandemic might be winding down, but not yet quite certain it is.
It’s almost impossible to buy a bottle of wine in New York today without encountering a WSET-credentialed retailer or sommelier. And more and more wine professionals have these four letters after their names thanks to the International Wine Center and Mary Ewing-Mulligan, its proprietor and president.
Mary Ewing-Mulligan MW, leading US wine educator, owner/President of International Wine Center and the first woman in North America to become a Master of Wine, was presented with WSET’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Awards and Graduation Ceremony last night.
