Ruth Wilson Gilmore Biography
Ruth Wilson Gilmore is a writer, educator, and researcher. She holds a leading role as the Director of the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics and also serves as a Professor of Geography in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her academic and research pursuits extend to a broad array of topics including abolition, racial capitalism, organized violence, organized abandonment, changing state structure, the aesthetics and politics of seeing, labor and social movements, and internationalism.
Gilmore is an established author, known for her books "Abolition Geography: Essays Towards Liberation" and "Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California". The latter won the Lora Romero First Book Publication Prize for the best book in American Studies by the American Studies Association in 2008 and a prestigious book award from USC College in the same year. Additionally, she co-authored "Development Arrested: The Blues and Plantation Power in the Mississippi Delta". Her contribution to "Stuart Hall: Selected Writings on Race and Difference", edited with Paul Gilroy, was published in 2021. Antipode Foundation released a documentary titled "Geographies of Racial Capitalism" in 2020, featuring Gilmore's internationalist work.
In parallel to her academic roles, Gilmore has been instrumental in grassroots organization, co-founding several social justice organizations, such as the California Prison Moratorium Project, Critical Resistance, and the Central California Environmental Justice Network. Over the years, her work has been recognized with multiple honors. In 2012, she received the inaugural Angela Y. Davis Prize for Public Scholarship from the American Studies Association. Later, in 2014, she was awarded the Harold M. Rose Award for Anti-Racism Research and Practice by the Association of American Geographers. She then earned the American Studies Association Richard A. Yarborough Award for excellence in teaching and mentoring in 2017. In 2020, she was named one of the world's top 50 thinkers for the Covid-19 age by Prospect and the following year, in 2021, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Gilmore's influence and impact have reached beyond the academic realm. She was the keynote speaker at the National Women's Studies Association annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia in 2011. In 2020, she made an appearance in a podcast on prison abolition and police funding by Intercepted. Her achievements and contributions were further celebrated in 2023 with a mural painted by artist and filmmaker Jess X. Snow in New Haven, Connecticut, honoring her life and work.
