In this presentation, Yamiche Alcindor looks at the current political issues facing America and shares her experiences reporting on international, national and local dynamics. She offers her observations on the White House and Washington politics, her thoughts on how social justice issues impacting the country’s future and her analysis of the latest stories surrounding elections. Alcindor also talks about how her decision to pursue journalism came at 16 years old when she learned the tragic truth about the 1955 murder of Emmett Till and the launch of the civil rights movement. She also discusses how economic and racial segregation have impacted America and how her own story—that of a young woman whose family immigrated to the U.S. from Haiti in the 1970s—has influenced how she covers the world as a journalist.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in times of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy.” Yamiche Alcindor believes the chaotic, tough, and difficult times align perfectly with the teachings of Dr. King. In this presentation, Alcindor urges her audience to find their purpose, do the work to seek truth and then press for justice. Alcindor also reflects on the importance for each of us to take the time to pause and consider the sense of urgency Dr. King embraced to forever change American society.
