Mark Shriver Biography
Mark Kennedy Shriver, the son of Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, is a former Maryland state legislator, a leader in children's education and poverty prevention, and the author of "A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver," a New York Times best-seller. He serves as the Senior Vice President of Save the Children, U.S. Programs and Advocacy, and President of the Save the Children Action Network, focusing on expanding educational and emergency response programs to aid children across the United States.
From 1995 to 2003, Shriver served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. During his tenure, he was Maryland's first-ever Chair of the Joint Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, and was recognized multiple times as Outstanding Legislator of the Year by various advocacy and civic organizations. He also led a national coalition that successfully advocated for the creation of the National Commission on Children and Disasters, and subsequently chaired this commission.
In 1988, Shriver founded The Choice Program, an innovative intervention project for at-risk youth, through the Shriver Center at the University of Maryland. He has been involved in numerous boards and commissions, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency's National Advisory Council. His book "A Good Man," published in June 2012, not only explores the moral principles that guided his father, Sargent Shriver, but also discusses how these principles have influenced his own work and advocacy in children's education and poverty prevention.
